I just got my DirecTV system install this past weekend. After fixing a few problems with my MythTV installation, I can now record shows (the recorder was failing earlier).

My question is this: From all appearances when I was testing out the recording this morning, I set MythTV to record a specific channel, but MythTV ends up recording whatever channel the DirecTV receiver is set to. Another nice feature: If I switch channels, the channel on my recording also switches. I have the receiver hooked up to my computer through s-video out and the audio-out options on the back of the receiver. The receiver is hooked up to my TV through coax cable.

Am I missing something obvious that I need to be doing in order to record the channels that I want to? It seems pretty dumb that I would have to have the receiver set to the specific channel that I want to record. Kind of defeats the whole idea of recording the show in the first place! :(

MythTV needs to control your

MythTV needs to control your STB somehow, either by serial cable or IR-Blaster. This in turn is usually followed by using the correct channel change script and then placed in mythtvsetup correctly. This is all described in the FAQ under remote. http://mythdora.com/?q=node/202

I only have one STB right

I only have one STB right now. Here is the scenario to consider:

If I setup the IR-Blaster to control the STB, and I setup Myth to record channel 15, and I'm watching TV surfing channels during the recording, the recording is still going to stay on channel 15 and record the entire time, or do I need to get another receiver? This is the problem that I'm having: I record a program, and I change channels on the receiver to surf to see what's on, and my channel changes in my recording.

Right now, I do not have the IR-Blaster setup. I am just feeding Myth through the s-video out.

If you have only one STB

If you have only one STB then you can only watch one thing at a time. This means you cannot channel surf while recording or it will record what you surf. MythTV needs to control your STB via remote control. Changing channels on the STB itself will not work correctly. Myth needs to do that for you cause it needs to know what channel your on and match that to your STB.

So even if I were to get

So even if I were to get another receiver dedicated to my MythTV box, I would still need to setup the IR-Blaster, even if I were to set the new receiver to the channel that I wanted it to record?

It's not a problem to get another STB off of eBay or something. They're going for about $20 after shipping. Thanks for all you help! I appreciate it a lot!

No. You could manually

No. You could manually change the channel on the STB to what you wanted and then change the channel on your Myth system to match. This will allow you to record something if you needed to. The IR Blaster is only a convenience.

Maybe a step-by-step will

Maybe a step-by-step will help me through this:

1)Set STB to channel that I want to record (or configure IR_Blaster for my STB and it will change STB to appropriate channel that I want to record)

2)Select channel from program guide that I want to record.

3)If I am not using IR_Blaster, set MythTV to channel I want recorded (but how?). If I am using IR_Blaster, I don't have to do anything, because the blaster will change the STB to the appropriate channel that it needs in order to record, and myth will know what channel it changed the STB to.

Is the above correct? Have I missed anything?

Sorry to be asking so many newb-type questions. Seems like cable was a whole lot easier to deal with.

1) Yes

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Not using a Blaster, just change the channel on MythTV to want you want. If using a Blaster, you will have to set this up correctly to talk to your STB. This can be VERY tricky!!!. But yes it will change the channel on the STB when you change the channel from your MythBox. You will no longer change the channels on the STB itself any longer.
