I just installed MythDora 4 and almost everything worked out out box except my remote I have a fire fly mini (from snapstream) I tried choose the snapstream option in the remote setup page but I assume that is for the full size fire fly as it did not seem to make my fire fly mini work.

So far the only thing i have managed to do that i think is a step in the right direction is to just pick firefly at the setup, and then edit my lircd.conf file to look like the one here: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Snapstream_firefly_mini
after that i did this:
"lircd -d /dev/lirc0 /etc/lircd.conf" which i saw somewhere and after doing those two things irw will run but pressing buttons does not seem to do anything.

I have also tried choosing the no remote option and then going through the steps on the page above. But i get stuck real fast with an error: "bash: patch: command not found" when i try to apply the kernel patch in the first step.

So if anyone has any experience getting this remote to work and would like to give me a very detailed guide i would very much appreciate it. (I have about 2 days experience with Linux to give you an idea of how detailed im talking about.

Being a Linux newbie, I

Being a Linux newbie, I wouldn't recommend attempting this. Patching is one thing but kernel patching? That's for experienced users. Besides your going to need to install the kernel source for all this. My recommendation would be to get another remote.

success (mostly)

Thanks for the quick reply. I found some other way of doing it that seems to be working though its kinda a work around. it was another suggestion on that wiki page from my first post using xmodmap to map the buttons on the remote to keys on the keyboard. i can get this to work just fine. but it only seems to last until i log out and i cant seem to get it to do this one command on startup at all. the command is just:

"xmodmap keys.txt" ive put this in the startup.sh file in the /home/mythtv/.kde/Autostart folder. ive put it at the top of the file the bottom of the file. i also tried making another .sh file and putting it in there (the other file is alphabetically before) the keys.txt file is in the same folder as the .sh files.

can you help me to get this command to run automatically on startup

thanks
-Nate

The Autostart folder is a

The Autostart folder is a good place to put it if your using KDE ;-). SO what you can do is create another .sh file like you did with the command xmodmap /path/keys.txt. I think your not adding the full path to where ever your keys.txt file is. Also make sure that this new .sh file is executable by doing this at xterm chmod +x ????.sh. Also remember that a .sh file needs to start off with #!/bin/bash.

yep wasnt using KDE

yea looks like the problem was i wasn't using KDE, or more the problem was i didn't even know what it was :)

If any other newbs stumble upon this (and for my future reference when i forget what i did like a week form now) MythDora defualts to using Gnome and here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Autostart_Programs is info on how to auto start things with it.

Thanks for your help Dennis.
