VI is a quick and easy way to edit
Open a console
move the the /etc directory
Type vi filename.ext
use i to start inserting
when your done, esc, ":q" to quit without saving ":wq" to write and save.

more info needed, Are the front and back ends on the same box or separate machines? are you seeing an error message like " couldn't connect to backend blah blah blah"? if so what does the "blah blah blah part say? every time this has happened to me it was because of a failure to properly setup the backend
