I have been using a WinBlows machine to edit files but how do I do it locally
I am reading about setting up NFS shares. I thought this was already setup in Mythdora 4.0
If it is how do I point the front end at the shares?

Re: What program is used to edit files like fstab

vi and nano are two editors available on MythDora (hmmm, maybe vim and joe, too). I recommend (and use) nano. Note that for many system files you will need to be root to edit them (or at least, to save your edits). Other editors can be installed with yum, if you know what you want.

I don't know about pre-setup NFS shares. I use SAMBA to share my recordings, since I'm sharing them with a windows machine.

VI is a quick and easy way to edit

Open a console
move the the /etc directory
Type vi filename.ext

use i to start inserting

when your done, esc, ":q" to quit without saving ":wq" to write and save.

Thanks

Now what do I make my frontend see the backend?

more info needed, Are the front and back ends on the same box or separate machines? are you seeing an error message like " couldn't connect to backend blah blah blah"? if so what does the "blah blah blah part say? every time this has happened to me it was because of a failure to properly setup the backend

I still use windows for much of my editing, it's just easier with my setup to sit on the couch with my windows laptop and make changes rather than going to the keyboard of the mythbox. I use a program called winscp to ssh into the mythbox and edit files in its commander like interface, and then use putty if I need to make command line entries.

This whole approach also helps keep my wife AWE inspired as she watches me change channels from my laptop (I also keep 5 remotes handy just to confuse her into believing that she can't possibly run such a complicated setup) This has really turned the living room entertainment center back into the KINGS realm!!!!

LOL. I was able to get the

I was able to get the frontend fixed last night. It was mostly setting up the NFS shares that I had no idea how to do it. There will be a tutorial later this week or early next on "how to setup the nfs shares for noob's" (ie. people like me) Sam was a tremendous help. Cuddos Sam. ;-)

Most of my trouble was the firewall setup. I just disabled it and I could get to the box just fine. I am letting my hardware firewall handle everything now.
