I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but I looked through the forums and couldn't find the answer. As my machine is a little light on ram (256mb) I'd like to use XFCE instead of Gnome.
Besides downloading XFCE from the package manager, how do I go about this?
Thanks,
fasteddy

Since XfCE4 is already on
Since XfCE4 is already on the MythDora disk, you can install these instead of using the package manager. Just insert the MythDora disk and at xterm as root you could try doing this:
# rpm -ivh /media/cdrom/MythDora/xf*.rpm
Once you get those installed you can simply do a ctrl+alt backspace which will take you to the GDM screen and you should see a tab that says session. Choose xfce and make that the default session if/when asked.

Well that's interesting. So what's wrong with my install that it isn't resolving dependencies properly?
I have noticed that the packages needed aren't listed in the package manager or contained on the install cd's. This is why I wondered about the repository. However, from what I've read in the forums, I'm not the only one having problems installing packages (see, for example, http://mythdora.com/?q=node/2544 ).
There is no telling what
There is no telling what happened with the user in that post you mention. He just posted saying that he had an incorrect driver installed and that it is now working. All of the needed xfce4 rpms are on the MythDora disk if you look inside that MythDora directory. All dependencies are satisfied I can assure you as I have xfce4 installed myself. If you have done any kind of a system upgrade, which is a HUGE NO NO, then your screwed. If this is a fresh install then try this for shits and giggles.

Yes, I should've mentioned - this is a clean install of MD 4.0. I'll try this when I get home and post the results.
Thanks for the advice thus far.

Ah thats why. You do not have a fresh install of MythDora. You need to boot into the default kernel for MythDora.

Borked Install?
So, seeing as I've edited grub to use the default kernel, and the same thing is happening, does this mean I've borked my install?

Damnit...I deleted the wrong double post. Sorry bout that guys. Anyway the conversation went as follows for anyone wanting to know. Fasteddy edited grub.conf and got the default kernel back but things were still messed up. Bigchris advises that a reinstall maybe in order and suggests to make sure that fasteddy install xfce4 during the software package selection. Fasteddy says he may do this but Gnome is running soso for him at the moment and may try it like that.

Ultimately, I simply reinstalled. Now I have KDE and XFCE installed (but not Gnome, which I don't really care for).
And did it help?
I'm wondering if Fasteddy saw any performance improvement by going to XFCE or does he still need to spring for another stick of ram to get his machine up to speed?
