What the heck happened? Lost configs, tuner definitions, auto login, theme, more?

First, before anything else, a personal thank you for a great one stop shop for MythTV. I have been using Myth since .15 or so. Mythdora takes my build time from a full day to an hour or so. Way to go guys!

OK, now my problem. Sorry this might be vague. A few days ago I noticed that the theme had changed in Myth without my input. I went to look at my recordings, and it threw the backend not running error.

Since I havent booted in a LONG time, I figured well she's just not happy now and needs a bounce. Came back - did not auto login to myth. Weird again. Logged in, backend still not running so I start it. Start to poke around to see what else is wrong - find no live TV access. Stopped the backend, went to Mythtv setup, both of my tuner cards are missing. Ok, weird. Set them up again.

Come back, its not recording shows now (restarted backend of course). Rechecked mythtvsetup - had to connect the schedules to the tuners again.

She starts recording again, but now I cant watch anything. HD is horribly artifacted and choppy, even shows recorded by my PVR150 are choppy. What the heck?

Start to poke around. Found that both of my hard drives are not using DMA anymore. Turned DMA on. Still choppy, and now Im noticing the system in general is very slow. My other box, which is just a front end, is sluggish when poking around the MythTV interface. I presume the DB is is running poorly on the backend to cause this.

I'm at a total loss and would appreciate any help or advice on how to find out what the heck happened a couple days ago. It almost seems like my hard drives had bad failures - corrupted something, is still corrupting things???

Most importantly I need to know if I had a sudden hardware failure, and what failed. I dont care even that much about rescuing this build from oblivion as I am anxiously waiting for MD5 and planned on rebuilding then anyways, so I can limp along for a little while here. (Its done when its done is a good enough answer for me on that!)

Help? Can someone help me understand what tools I should use to make sure my hardware is ok? I would rather know now that I have a hardware problem before MD5 is ready. I would be crushed if I spent the time rebuilding to MD5 only to find the same problem waiting for me...

Any help greatly appreciated.

sounds like a hostname changed....

did it? If you reboot, and you are on DHCP, if you get a hostname from comcast or whoever, it will change.

The fact that your theme changed out of the blue tells me that you booted up with a different hostname than before, and the system created an entire new database entry for the new hostname.

By running mythbackend setup, you created a "slave backend" system in the database, with no master backend to control it.

All of your old settings are still in the database, just new ones created with the new hostname. Figure out how to set your hostname back to what it was and your stuff should be right as rain. (except for the backend stuff...you'll need to start deleting and fixing tuner cards and the like).

Look for any errors posted

Look for any errors posted at startup or in the various logs kept in Linux. Also run Memtest. it is available on most live CDs and I think the Mythdora install disk. Let it go for several passes if possible.

To me, your symptoms "feel" like a hard drive near end of life. You could go to your hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software. Running that might give you an answer. It will also give you a way of checking your hard drives temperature which needs to be under 50 degrees C. for longevity.

Found it!

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I wanted to put some closure on this in case anyone else finds this thread looking for answers.

I parsed all the logs that I felt were relevant, and nothing showed any particular problems. Using Webmin, I checked the smart status on my drives. They did show some errors had accumulated over time, but nothing that would lead me to believe a real failure had occured, just run of the mill IDE errors here and there.

I swapped out the video card, but that didnt help. I rebuilt the OS while I had the older of the two hard drives disconnected. No help.

I changed memory slots and fiddled with the BIOS, still no help.

While all of this was occuring, the machine was moved out of my media cabinet to make working easier. I had the cover off - and then I realized I was hearing a crackling noise from INSIDE the box that I had not heard before, but only when I was trying to play HD media. I walked up to the box and the noise was coming from the power supply.

Voila. Replaced the power supply with a spare that I had laying around and everything is back to working normally. Now I could kick myself for rebuilding - I didnt back up my DB or recordings. Damn thing is just too loud now, have to buy a better one but at least I know what the problem was.

Other posts that reported Stutter and Artifact issues did indicate the PS as being a problem, but I didnt make the connection until I had the case off and HEARD the malfunction.

If you have a machine that is clearly strong enough to play the content you have but is stuttering and artifacted and you can't fathom why DO NOT overlook your power supply as this and other posts indicate. My machine booted and felt normal (after rebuilding) in every other way except when the extra load of both recording and displaying HD was put on the machine.

Cheers!

That's pretty unusual! Ordinarily, when a switching power supply starts crackling, a small puff of smoke and complete failure isn't far behind.
