So i finally got my driver upgrade to work, now my frontend doesnt have that discoloration thing. but i have another problem..
when i tell it to play a DVD, my monitor goes to a blank screen, i can hear the audio leading up to the main menu, and there is nothing i can do. pressing a few keys does stop it, i think, but i cant tell if it just locks up or what. nothing i do (esc, alt-f4, ctrl alt backspace, etc) brings anything back.
now i did fix it so it no longer tries to read from dev/dvd and instead reads from dev/sd0 or whichever, the right dvd drive is. it can rip just fine, matter of fact it is playing through a ripped version of red vs blue season 3 right now. but clicking Play DVD causes all sorts of problems.
Xine doesnt seem to want to work either.. but then again i am still new to all of this (like most people with problems it seems). Xine ran from outside MythTV is very choppy, and it brings up an error about dropping too many frames.
another thing that happens when i click play DVD, the mouse stays on the screen for about 20 seconds (i dont like mythtv hiding my mouse, so i stopped it from doing that) and then the mouse disappears, a little red spot thing appears on the screen and blips away after a second, then the audio starts.
anybody? i looked through the forums, tried a few things, but it didnt look like anyone had the same problem i had, just similar ones.
http://www.mythdora.com/?q=content/play-dvd-yields-blank-screen but mine doesnt loop back to the menu.. or anything else.
http://www.mythdora.com/?q=node/2485 seems more promising, but again, doesn't fix the problem.

Fixed
okay. so i dont know what i did.. and i am still having driver issues. not having the right resolution and all.
but here is the output, the DVD player seems to be working fine now, if only in Xine. which is fine. or great, depending on your preference.

You still have a driver
You still have a driver problem. You need to start mythfrontend manually from xterm and not the shortcut. Then watch a DVD and let it bomb. Hopefully you get back to the xterm screen and you will see the error output. What video card are you using? Xine should not be skipping.

attempt failed:
this post was second, still getting used to these forums. like the place though.
attempt failed:
i tried yum -y remove kmod-nvidia then yum -y install kmod-nvidia, no luck.
attempt does something:
so i reran nvidia-xconfig like it told me to, and this happens:
Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".
WARNING: Unable to find CorePointer in X configuration; attempting to add new CorePointer section.
Warning: The CorePointer device was not specified explicitly in the layout;
using the first mouse device.
Backed up file 'etc/X1/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
and i hit ctrl alt backspace...
then went through a series of blue screens, similar to the install screens.
"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). it is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?" yes no

i hit okay, it asks if i would like t try to configure the x server, and asks for root password
couldnt start x server on card 0, or on card 1, so it trys to start on a new config. it tries card 0, and i come up to the display settings window from gnome, with all th resolutions i can have, even above 1024xwhatever that i maxed out at before. i click the right settings (1680x1050 for this monitor).
the hardware tab lists the right hardware. the monitor is FPD2275W (autoconfigured) and the Video card is a nVidia corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] where as before they were both unknown.
lastly it says display settings changed, config was written to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, original config saved as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup, and it restarts fine
but as soon as it does restart, it drops back down to 1280x1024 res and can't recognize the video card.
SO CLOSE.
okay, so i ran it from xterm
okay, so i ran it from xterm and let it bomb.. then i alt tabbed over to the terminal window to see what came up. seems like alot of errors.. but idk. wasnt able to read any as my screen flipped to all red with some flashing yellow squares. hmm.
i will attempt to get some of that output, but for now:
i am using an Nvidia chaintech Gforce FX 5200 pci card, running on the driver i found on this page:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_173.14.05.html
i did what it told me to to, or at least what i tried to understand it told me to do.
i set inittab to start at 3 as opposed to 5,
(vim /etc/inittab id:[changed 5 to 3]:initdefault:)
restart
i navigated to my .run file i downloaded, and typed sh NVIDIA-(blah).run,
it said it had to build the kernel interface because it could not find one online, i said okay, and it installed. it said it modified the /x11/conf file or whichever (the same one gnome changes if you try to change the driver that way)
it installed everything and it looked like it worked. now though when i do start my machine, it says it cannot find nvidia.ko[error], and wont enable the driver until it has found one. then "disabling driver.. already disabled" [warning].
but the gnome loads up fine and i can play videos or rip dvds and all that stuff. i will try to get the term output.
this sucks. i really like mythdora. and its really nice to use to rip dvds to the hard drive, but i was hoping i could use it instead of a dvd player as well. if not, no big deal i guess. just have to remember not to click it.
