Help
I wonder how many forum threads start with, "Help".
Anyway, I can't play DVDs. Put the DVD in, hit PlayDVD in the mythfrontend menu and it blinks black for a second and then pops me back to the menu.
Going to the Terminal and loading the frontend, play DVD (barf) and quit back to the terminal and I have the following output (this is typed. Please forgive typos):
-------
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10-xine from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd with libdvdcss
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
Failed to open DVD device at /dev/dvd
-------
so I went and did a ls -la /dev/dvd and came out with the following:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Aug 10 21:27 /dev/dvd -> hdb - so I did ls -la /dev/hdb and got:
brw-rw-rw- 1 mythtv disk 3, 64 Aug 10 21:27 /dev/hdb
hdb is correct, as the DVD is the second device on the first controller... and I'm running as the mythtv user in so the permissions look good.
I'm running MythDora 4 after the update for SchedulesDirect back in January. I ~think~ that this is when this issue started happening, but I can't be sure. I seldom watch DVDs on this TV.
Thanks

Problem Solved
Wow... turns out it was a Hardware Failure after all! Who would have thought that a DVD-Writer could fail in such a manner as to no longer read commercial DVDs.
Of course with all the swapping I tore my IDE ribbon out of my connector so I'll need a new one before I put the "known good" drive back in... damnit.
Oh well.
Thanks everyone.

Looks like its trying to get to Fedora Core 6... can anyone tell me the correct yum upgrade mirror for MD5?
Thanks

Day 2
Ok, my Region is now set to 1... that would have been a problem but it looks like I'm not even getting to that point.
Tried mplayer and xine with no love. Tried changing my DVD device to /dev/hdb, no love.
I didn't expect either of the above to help as the drive *will* play non-commercial DVDs.
Error Output is still the same:
-------
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10-xine from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd with libdvdcss
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
*DATESTAMP* Failed to open DVD device at /dev/dvd
-------
in the above the error message shows the device as /dev/hdb when it is set that way, of course.
Any help at all? Anyone? I'm going to try a different drive, although I doubt its a hardware issue.
Thanks
Snazzed
Do all commercial DVD's you
Do all commercial DVD's you try to play fail? It really sounds like an encryption issue with a newer DVD. If that's the issue then there is nothing you can do about it.

4 so far
Hey Dennis
So far I've tried 4.
- Battlestar Galactica: Season 3 disc 3
- Thomas and Friends (I don't know which one)
- The Matrix
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
They are all recent purchases but they play fine on the 5+ yr old DVD Player that (still) sits on top of my TV.
I'll try an older disc tonight.
Failing that, I'll swap the drive in the off chance its, somehow, Hardware related.
...and failing that, if I update to Mythdora5, will that update all the Fedora and MythTV packages on my system (its only used for MythTV), or just components that need upgrading?
In other words if my libdvdcss has becomes corrupted, will it
replace it regardless of whether or not it is up to date?
hmmm... maybe I'll also try uninstalling and reinstalling libdbvdcss.
What Package Manager do most of you use? I came from Debian-land and I'm used to apt-get?
Thanks

Just remembered something!
I just remembered something! Months and months ago (hence I forgot) I was watching Battlestar on this thing. Season 3 Disc 3, watched two episodes. The next day I couldn't watch the last episode on the disc.
I remember now... I WAS able to play commercial DVDs on this previously and that same disc no longer works.
Must be something that has broken, hardware or software... but what?
Following my post above, I'll reInstall libdvdcss and throw in a different drive to start. Mythdora 5 if that doesn't help.
:)

additional notes
Forgot to mention, the initial permissions on /dev/hdb were for the root group and I thought that might be an issue so I changed the group to mythtv.
Also, none of the permissions should be an issue at all because un-encrypted (non commercial) DVDs play fine.
Thanks again.

You may have to set the initial region on your dvd drive. Often times the drives come from the manufacturer without the country set for the DVD standard. Typically a dvd player app will ask this, or windows will set it for you etc. But linux, it's left open ended.
Go get a utility called regionset, i believe it exists on atrpms yum repo. You can query and set the region for your DVD drive. You should set it to match your DVD region code.
Don't continuously attempt changing between regions as most firmwares will lock after 5 times.

wow... installing
wow... installing reagionset now... I can't for the life of me find an ATRPMS repository for Fedora Core 6. I've added f8 for my repository. Hope the Fedora 8 packages works with my Fedora Core 6.
I don't even know, for sure, that this is the fix.
... and regionset is now installed but it tells me
ERROR: Could not open disc "/dev/hdb"!
Ensure that there is any readable CD or DVD in the drive.
There is a DVD (The Matrix) in the drive. Lets try again with a non-commercial disc.
Ok, regionset works with a non-com disc in the drive and tells me the drive has no region set (drive plays discs from region(s):, mask=0xFF)
Yay. Ok, use regionset and set the drive to Region 1
Put The Matrix back in... No love. regionset confirms it is now/still Region 1. Lets see if I need to reboot.
oh... its thinking about it...
ARGH.
*sigh* This is why people pay stupid big bucks for commercial hardware that "just works".
Ok, I'm set to Region1 and it still doesn't work. I'll come back to this tomorrow.

Have you tried the internal
Have you tried the internal mythvideo player on the dvd or mplayer just for kicks?
internal vs mplayer
The PlayDVD command is "internal" and that is the one that generates the errors posted above... I though "internal" used mplayer. If not, I can give mplayer a shot but I'm wouldn't expect that to solve the problem.
I've also tried xine but that locks my system up hard and requires a hard reboot.
Thanks
