slow program guide while watching live TV
Submitted by Aaron on August 17, 2008 - 7:37am
My frontend / slave backend's program guide is terrible slow while watching TV. Has anyone else had this problem? It is connected to the master backend via 1gb ethernet so I know it is not a network problem. The machine is powered by an AMD 64 x2 4400+ so I do not think it is a processor problem either. I have tried changing the playback profiles and they all have the same issue. I am using the default xorg.conf that installed with the system. Any suggestions? When I updated to the latest rpm I cannot remember if I I did a yum upgrade \*myth\* or a yum upgrade \*mythtv\* could that have changed anything? Is there a way to see which one I did without reinstalling the system from scratch?

Maybe a solution

Simply go back to the command prompt that you did this in as root and hit the up arrow key. This will scroll through all the past commands you entered. The proper way is yum upgrade \*myth\*

I am still getting a slow
I am still getting a slow response with the program guide. I tried every playback profile and while watching liveTV (not that it happens very often) it crawls! Any other suggestions?
One other thing to check
One other thing to check. If you have the option enabled to show channel icons in the program guide try disabling it and see if it makes a difference.
My program guide was painfully slow, 3 or 4 seconds to page down, and I tried all kinds of things to speed up performance before I realized that I was missing a number of channel icons and disabling that option completely solved the speed issue.
Afterward I went back and made sure I had all of the icons and was able to re-enable the option. The guide apparently takes a real hit every time it attempts to render a page and finds a missing icon.
From what others have been
From what others have been seeing this is a bug in the MythTV code and not everyone is effected. Unfortunately you will have to wait for this to be corrected when ATrpms puts them in an updated rpm.

I have been following that
I have been following that thread as well. Thanks for the information. Is that something you update or is it an updated version of mythtv?
No we don't update that.
No we don't update that. When fixes come into SVN then they will eventually trickle down to the fixes rpms that are hosted on ATrpms. But it won't be long before F8 becomes EOL.
