Can one upgrade from MD4 to MD10.21? How about from 5 to 10.21?

If Comcast screws me next month when they go all digital, I'll likely have to change my system significantly anyway, so I figure I'll upgrade due to several features that are fixed in recent versions that annoy me in the old MythTV.

How painless will it be to go from MD4 up to current? Or should I do a double hop from 4 to 5 to 10.21?

As a side note, has anyone heard definitively what Comcast will do for those without boxes now, but with QAM capable TVs/tuners? I mean, it is well within their power to unencrypt the same 70 or so channels that are presently unencrypted in analog. Digital != encrypted. In fact, some stupid channels are already available in the open in digital format. Of course, nobody in their phone service hierarchy has a clue what they'll do. They all say the same three lines from a queue card with no answers in it. I think if I have to get boxes, I'll just switch to satellite. Aren't there some modded boxes that pull firewire straight out? How about those new component tuners, are they good?

Thanks as always, for the help/advice. MythDora rocks!

Going from 4 to 5 or 4 to

Going from 4 to 5 or 4 to 10.21 could be equally painful. There are major changes between both and the jump to 5 then to 10.21 may not save you any headache or time. Either way I'd do it as a hot upgrade to see where the conflicts are then carefully pick them apart and do a series of yum updates to get me there. I think the major show stoppers will be the rpm library changes which don't typically place nice across versions. Especially true because if I recall correctly MD4 was atrpms customer rpmlibs...

As for your comcast question. As far as I know most cable companies will not be affecting their analog subscribers. In many areas they are by law required to provide the clear QAM channels as local access so that will probably not change. I have analog via Time-Warner and to my knowledge nothing in my service will be changing, the cable companies are not bound by the FCC to switch to digital programming exclusively.

However, this may indeed be the push that starts cable companies down that road as they are ever increasing the channel lineups and probably want as much BW as possible down the pipe.

Thanks for the reply. I

Thanks for the reply. I noticed that a 5 to 10.21 thread was started about the same time I started this one. Looks like I'll just go all the way then. I will be backing up the OS partition to an external HD along with the DB.

At some point, when I was first getting into this, I had had to reinstall MD4 over the top of itself and it gracefully left my other partitions alone. I seem to recall, though, that had I not remembered what their names were, that I'd have been screwed. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I'll be sure to write down my partitions and their sizes just in case. I'd like to build a NAS some day, maybe soon, and upgrade my network to TB. I have three 500GB drives in my single front/back end now and room for three more, but it's getting crowded in there and there's no RAID setup presently.

As for cable, I hope you are right. That would be great.

Thanks again. I love this community.
