Mythmusic w. s/pdif not playing

I have a Soundblaster live 5.1 connected to my receiver via s/pdif (coax).
Watching TV, watching DVDs and watching videos is fine.

Audio device: ALSA:spdif, passthrough device: default, AC3 passthrough: checked, DTS passthrough: checked

The only thing I cannot get to work is listening to music via mythmusic. When starting mythmusic, the player appears and then nothing more (no visualization, no time counter) and true silence. When I exit the player, I am asked if I want to continue playing.

mplayer some_mp3 -ao alsa:device=iec958 works fine and I can hear music.

Changing audio devices and passthrough device did not help.
Mythmusic is currently using default audio output -> changing this to anything like ALSA:iec958 did not help either.

Currently using MythDora 5 with all updates.

Just in case someone is

Just in case someone is interested in this or is experiencing some similar issue.

Changing the Mythmusic output device to

ALSA:plug:iec958

did the trick.

Nothing more has to be done - no .asoundrc or mixer settings. Just change the output device and you're fine.

Thank you so much for posting this! I've been struggling to get this to work right for a month. Typed this in and boom, instant music.

Anyone know if configuring audio is easier in the new 10.x release? By "easier," I mean does it work without having to type arcane text into the UI or some configuration file. I don't want to have to learn the ins and outs of ALSA architecture and ALSA-specific format strings like this (and clealy I haven't learned enough or I wouldn't be complaining! :-) ).

It would be nice if all the valid choices showed up in a list so I could just try each of them. Or better yet, if I could just check a box that said "send all audio straight to my receiver digitally through sound card X" (and it would let me pick which one). Don't make me learn a bunch of stuff, just do it! I'm a GUI software developer so I have strong feelings about minimizing the cognitive load on the user.

I hope Linux gets there some day. It's getting better, but I still run into the occasional issue that can only be resolved by typing in a precise text string somewhere.

Okay, I'll stop whining now. Thanks again, Razorblade!

This has nothing to do with

This has nothing to do with MythDora. If you want to find an answer to this or even make a request then you need to post this on the mythtv dev list.

True

You're right, of course... Mythdora is excellent. I was really just venting about MythTV and Linux in general. Didn't mean to imply anything bad about MythDora. I will propose a usability enhancement request on the MythTV dev list as you suggested.

Thanks for the feedback, and thanks again for all your work on MythDora.
