No Sound In Mythdora 10.21
I am having troubles with audio on my recently installed Mythdora system. I have no sound at all.
Here is my setup:
ECS GeForce 8200A Black Edition
AMD Phenom X4 9650
4GB DDR2-1066 in Ganged mode
SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS Gamer
eVGA GeForce 9800GT 512MB
Hauppauge HVR-1600
VBox USB-3560 external tuner (not working)
(1) Samsung 320GB SATA 3G HD (45GB Linux partition where Mythdora is installed)
(1) WD Caviar Blue (?) 500GB (Video drive)
I had this exact same problem with Mythbuntu, which is why I uninstalled it and put Mythdora on instead, since Fedora by nature seems to be better at hardware detection. I've heard two different stories as to why there are sound issues:
1. The NVidia binary drivers bork your system, and this I could believe, because I tried to install MythTV on an older Ubuntu system and when I updated the NVidia binaries, I lost my HVR-1600.
2. The problem is in the kernel.
Is there a workaround for this problem, because I am trying to kick Vista off of my hard drive, and this is a fairly big stumbling block. If there isn't a workaround, is there some way of downgrading the kernel below what 10.21 came with? And if all fails, anyone one a six-week-old 9800GT, because I'm going back to ATI. As much as I dislike them, at least they've got semi-competent open source drivers.

Actually, I did. Turns out
Actually, I did. Turns out that not all of my sound options got installed. I needed to install alsamixergui, because the toggle switch for S/PDIF on/off is engaged by default, as if you only had a digital connection. Once I unchecked that, I got the sound back.
I recently reinstalled regular Fedora 11, and after I replace the HVR-1600 with an HVR-2250, I'll be putting mythtv back on again. I figure since the sound works now, it should continue after I install myth.
Then again, I could wait until there's a corresponding version of Mythdora too...
But suffice it to say that I fixed the sound problem. I thought I had read somewhere that that was a problem specific to Creative cards, but you might want to check that yourself as well. Good luck; fixing that problem just brought Vista one step closer to extinction.
Try to pump up the volume.
Try to pump up the volume. Sometimes it's that simple!
Double click on the speaker icon (top right) and try it...
[edit]
i just saw your soundcard...
So, try to update to latest kernel and see how it goes (system->administration->update system).
You can always disable audigy and use the onboard sound card.
Already tried that. Didn't
Already tried that. Didn't work.
Disabling the Audigy is not an option because the system also runs Vista, and I can't always be around to go into the BIOS and reenable the card.
Besides, this is something that shouldn't be happening in the first place. Given NVidia's reluctance to let anyone do a true open-source driver that enables 3D, I'm inclined to lay this one at their feet. They have to understand that they're not really helping their standing in the Linux community by putting out borked drivers that hose your system. Right now, I'm half-tempted to dump Nvidia altogether and find an ATI card, if it weren't for the fact that I just bought the damn thing.
But it'll work itself out one way or the other, I suspect. One way or the other, Vista will be gone from my HD and Mythdora will be taking its place.
Have you tried to remove
Have you tried to remove nvidia drivers and use open source nv driver. If you remove them then what happens? Audigy works?
It strange to me that nvidia drivers affected your sound.
I haven't tried uninstalling
I haven't tried uninstalling them yet, but I was hoping it wouldn't come to that because I was planning to install Unreal Tournament 2004, and it doesn't work so well without the binary drivers.
Apparently, this is a more commonplace issue than I thought. I had issues with this in both regular Ubuntu and Mythbuntu as well, so it could very well be a kernel bug. But if that's the case, shouldn't there be a workaround until some kind of patch hits?
You can try temporarily
You can try temporarily uninstalling nvidia driver. See what happens and install it again if you need it. It only takes a couple of minutes.
Anyway i believe that the problem is not nvidia driver. Did you tried the sound tests (Preferences->hardware->sound)?
Did you disabled onboard sound card in bios?
Did you update your system to the latest packages?

Oh, yeah, one other thing I forgot to add. When I switch the driver preference over to ALSA, I am able to get the test tone, but when I reboot, I still don't get any sound otherwise, despite the fact that it kept my preferences through the reboot.
I also heard that it may be a permissions issue, but would it even give me a test tone if I wasn't authorized to use the audio device?
Sound Problems
I am experiencing the exact same problem as you describe.
I can do test and I hear the tone but no sound through MythTV.
Did you figure it out?
