I eventually made a home server for many of the reasons you mention (and others).
I kept my MD 5 backend and moved most other functions to the server, which is running on an older motherboard loaded with Centos 5.1. Like you, I'm much more familiar with the Red Hat systems. I've played with Ubuntu on a desktop, but have reverted to Fedora for that; mostly use Windows on my desktops for job related reasons.

Services I run the Centos system are mysql (which is no longer running on the MD server), media shared via NFS and Samba (videos, music), ntp, and a few other minor services. The MythDora system now stores only recordings and temp files on its local filesystem.
I noticed straight away that my MD server ran smoother with the database access off on another spindle.
I also have a MD 10.21 based frontend; I'd like to move my MD 5 server to MD 10.21, but haven't yet dedicated time to doing that, hoping instead that 11.22 will come along... not holding my breath; not in too big a hurry as long as it's running well.

Not sure if your referring

Not sure if your referring to Fedora not upgrading well by itself or just MythDora. If your referring to MythDora the answer is that the repos weren't always compatible but since version 10.21 rpmfusion is now in place and upgrades should be smoother now. But for anyone using versions prior to 10.21, yes it doesn't upgrade well. It seems everyone is on the Ubuntu wagon and I'm not sure why. I'll more then likely try this out myself to see what it does.
