Hi All,

How can I tell what the performance level of my disks are? I have 2 SATA drives in a LVM group. I'm having performance problems with HD material and am wondering what my disks are doing while i am playing HD material...

Install the sysstat

Install the sysstat package.

yum install sysstat

Then use sar....

Try nmon to monitor disk activity

I use nmon (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/WikiPtype/nmon) which works well for me l to see how busy each disk is at a high level.

I too experienced performance issues and I/O errors when recording/playing too many simultaneous HD programs using LVM. When I moved to 10.21 I changed to Storage Groups to spread out the I/O amongst several drives avoiding these problems and gaining the added recovery benefits (when a drive in an LVM group fails the data is lost on ALL drives in that group; when using Storage Groups only the data on THAT drive is lost). If you find your LVM is often banging on the same physical disk then Storage Groups should help you as well.
