Hi - I've successfully set up Mythdora 12 using the onboard video chip on my motherboard. Now I have found an old nvidia fx5200 (fanless for low noise) that I want to stick in my box.
I have searched google and here for advice on installing a different video card but nothing much came up. I can do it in deb based distros but don't know how to do it with mythdora.
Could someone put me straight or point me to a link?
TIA
RJ

That's an awfully weak card
That's an awfully weak card for a HTPC box, the only trick to installing is to make sure nvidia is listed as the driver on Xorg.conf. The 6200 is the minimum for mpeg2 HD but for mpeg4 HD you need at least an 8000 series to be able to use VDPAU. What's the built in chip on your motherboard? BTW you can get fanless cards as high as 9500GT. VDPAU is the best thing that's happened to HTPC's in a long while if not the best ever. Once you have VDPAU and see your CPU run lightly as well as see completely smooth playback with even mpeg4, namely h.264, you will never want to look back.
agree'd this is a very old
agree'd this is a very old card and Xvmc support will be dropped in 0.25 but for now you can run
yum install kmod-nvidia-legacy
which should install the nvidia legacy drivers.
What would you play on it?
What would you play on it? Four years ago a 6200 was the bare minimum to get good HD playback and even then mpeg2 only. When I started coming up with h.264 encoded mpeg4, even a dual core 3ghz would not allow smooth playback with the 6200. XVMC did not work well on HD material for me so I never was able to use it at any time.
As far as old, even the 195 drivers are rather old. I had to install the 260 drivers manually to get my Nvidia 460GTX to work.
I would not be surprised if the chipset video was actually much higher performing than the tiny slow 5200.
Thanks for the advice guys.

I'll certainly look into higher end fanless cards - didn't know you could get them any more (!) My Tranquil is almost completely noiseless (no fans) but doesn't have a lot of guts - a 1.7 Mobile Pentium chip and Intel Atom 17x17 board. The tv card is an old Haup WinTV PVR 150.
I am a bit like the Japanese soldier coming out of the forests to find the war was over 25 years ago - I obviously need to read up a bit on more modern installations.
Cheers for now
