I am trying to install on a new box with FX5200 graphics card. HVR1600 tuner. Downloaded the iso and checked md5. It hung on installing packages so I cut down install to just the most basic and after a few tries it got through. But X doesn't start and there are problems with the internet connection.

I know support for future versions has stopped but thought previous versions would still be able to get packages, etc through download. Perhaps this is because of internet setup issues on my box.

I have installed separate front end and back end about a year ago so am not a complete noob but always seem to get hung up in installs going down rabbit trails for errors or some such.

I can get to the command line with Alt-F4. My /var/log/Xorg.0.log indicates "Failed to initialize nvidia" and other such messages but it does appear that the proper nvidia driver was installed. I plan to copy these files and xorg.conf off to examine further but it is clear that something is seriously wrong.

I was going to ssh into the box but ran ifconfig and found eth0 does not have an ip address.

Need some help. Have considered trying Mythbuntu instead as that seems to have an active following.

Somewhat unrelated, this forum seems very unresponsive to creating new topics. I tried last night (and many times on different days before that) and waited a very long time, never getting a Create forum topic page. I looked at the screen this morning and I finally have the page (had all night to load). What's up with that? Other sites load fine.

I had the same error, and this worked for me

I have a Nvidia card and a HVR-1600 and had to do this if I chose to use the Nvidia driver.
Try typing the following on the kernel line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

vmalloc=256MB

e.g.

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32.23-170.fc12.i686 ro root=/dev/RaidSys_vg/root vmalloc=256MB quiet SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 KEYTABLE=us rdblacklist=nouveau

Did you enable the repos that

Did you enable the repos that are indicated in the install guide? If Mythbuntu works for you, I would go for it. I didn't like it, Ubuntu is great as a desktop, but hasn't impressed me as a server.

Repos I chose

Could you be more specific? Are your referring to the install guide here?

If so, yes, I went by that. I had some trouble installing some packages so only added the nvidia drivers and used the default install repo only.

I again had to wait a LONG time to enter and post this reply - I actually selected reply last night and entered it this morning then had to wait a few more hours after I selected preview so be able to save. Other web sites seem to work ok. Guess I should post that in the site issues section instead of here...

I can post log files but am hesitant to because some are pretty long. Which ones should I look at/post? I am going to try Mythbuntu as I have had lots of issues with Fedora sound for every release I can remember.

I may come back to Mythdora. I ran across several posts about 12.23 installs not working but installing 10 and then upgrading to 12.23 working so may give that a shot.

Not sure which logs to look

Not sure which logs to look at. I've never had any issues installing or setting it up. Of course that doesn't help you in this instance. I would look at the DNS your network is using and try and trouble shoot the connection issues to Mythdora.com. It could be causing issues with downloading updates and other software during install. Sorry that is all I can really think of. I have checked ours from here and using a VPN to our business network and can connect without any issues.
