Newbie here, with some questions setting up my network connection. This is my first venture into Linux/Fedora and MythTV, so be gentle. :)
I am Frankensteining a new MythTV system based on an ASUS P8Z68-V Gen3 Pro motherboard. I thought it would be interesting to try Linux, since all my prior experence lies with various Windows versions. It looked like Mythdora 12.23 might be a reasonable approach, since the pre-packaged nature would simplify my learning curve. Well the PC is up and running MythTV, but I'm running into networking issues. I've tried to self-support myself with a ton of google searches, but I'm thinking I need to reach out for assistance specific to my situation.
From what I have been able to figure out, MythTv isn't seeing my Ethernet connection. If I run "ifconfig -a" it only comes back with my local 127.0.0.1 connection (no listing for eth0). My motherboard has an onboard Intel 82579 Gigabit port, and I don't think Fedora 12 has drivers to support that. I have found one site on the net that gives instructions for installing 82579 drivers for Fedora 14, but I don't know if those would be useable with Fedora 12. I have also seen that Fedora 15 apparently has built in drivers for the 82579. I don't know if upgrading to that version 15 would completely hose my MythTV application.
Currently, if I run "lspci -nnk" it does come back with an entry stating: "Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:1503] (rev 05)"
Any guidance?

I'll be honest, when I hit a barrier with hardware, I replace it. I would suggest a PCI network card. Obviously it's not as fulfilling as getting the onboard NIC card working, but I look at it as how much is my time worth to invest to get it working. Thanks for the reply. Yes,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've thought about picking up a separate NIC, and it is not like these are a major investment. But I just want to avoid doing this if I can. I would have less of a problem doing that if it was an upgrade to older hardware. But my motherboard is brand new and has an onboard Gigabit port, and the Fedora 12 version is what is outdated, so my preference would be to update the drivers or perhaps the version of Fedora.
I am also rethinking whether the Mythdora 12.23 was the right way to start off my project. I chose it to try to keep the install simple. But since I'm hitting an obstacle, and I don't have major work invested yet, maybe it is time to consider alternatives. I could possibly wipe the drives clean and reload a later version of Fedora, then install MythTV 0.24. (Or 0.25 which is just about released.) Or, I could jump ship and load a combo package based on a different Linux flavor.
I am pretty busy for the next few days doing some other stuff, so I'll give this post a little time and see what thoughts people weigh in with. Thanks.
