Firstly, thank you much for creating Mythdora. I installed it a week ago and it has been a great experience! Things worked out of the box, were easy to configure and I find the balance great between features/ease of use on one side and simplicity/low resource usage on the other.

I have an odd problem with my network connection, though, and am a bit stuck on how to proceed from here. Here are the facts:

  • I am using the network interface on my ASUS A8N-VM CSM motherboard, which should be supported by the kernel that is included in Mythdora
  • The network connection worked initially. I set it up with a static IP address and was able to connect to the windows network as well as to the Internet.
  • The network connection stopped working yesterday for no apparent reason - I cannot ping any other address on the network, including the router. I did not knowingly change any software or network settings. I did spend time configuring MythTV, but would not expect this to impact the network connection.
  • I tried to set up the network with a static IP and with a dynamic IP, neither of the options work. When configuring the system with a static IP, the values are accepted, but I cannot access the network. When configuring it with a dynamic IP, the Mythdora box cannot reach the DHCP server.
  • The network connection still works without a problem from Windows XP on the same box, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.
  • Running "ifup" shows the network MAC address and current configuration for eth0 as expected
  • Running "network restart" works without any problems (4 times "ok" as a result).

My knowledge of Linux is average and I have hit a point where I do not know how to proceed. From what I can see everything works from a hardware perspective (it works in XP) and all the network commands work properly in Linux (network restart/ifup), but Linux is just not connecting to the network! What am I missing? How do I diagnose this further?

Any help/ideas are appreciated.

Johan

Problem solved

I appear to have solved the problem (although it is always possible it only works temporarily as things did work initially), This is what I did:

I installed the nvidia driver which can be found at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0310.html. It is an older driver (October 2005), but did the job for me. I then followed the instructions in the readme that came with the install file - in particular, I edited /etc/modprobe.conf as follows:

Comment the existing network configuration out

# alias eth0 forcedeth

Add the following lines to the configuration file:

alias eth0 nvnet
alias forcedeth off

I rebooted (probably not necessary, but seemed the best option) and the network worked fine. Letäs hope it stays that way!

Shag - I tried to bring the network down and up a few times, but that did not do the job for me.

d00dtv, thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Have you tried to ping the

Have you tried to ping the nic card itself? Have you setup the gateway correctly? Check to make sure that /etc/reslov.conf has your DNS info in there. And the all mighty fix, have you rebooted for good measure?

Doesn't work

Thanks for your quick feedback, Dennis.

I pinged the nic card (static IP address that I assigned to the network card) and this gave me a response so yes, I can ping the NIC card.

I am not sure on the gateway, but tried to put an entry in there to my router and this did not make any difference.

/etc/resolv.conf has the DNS info in there.

Rebooting was one of the first things I did. I rebooted into XP and the network works without a hitch there. Going back to Linux it doesn't work anymore. A cold start does not make any difference either.

Can there be some service that should be running and doesn't or some firewall that stops me from getting out?

Johan

The firewall is turned off

The firewall is turned off in MythDora to keep things like this from happening. One thing to try is get to an xterm and as root, type setup then give your IP, gateway and DNS again, then do your network restart. See if that won't work.

Edit - Doh, when you do setup, then go to Network configuration....sorry.

Network configuration does not make a difference

I tried to do the network configuration as you suggested - great idea, but didn't make any difference! The configuration also confirmed that the firewall is turned of (as you mentioned).

The current output from doing an ipconfig is as follows:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:71:31:4D:95:0B

At this point, the only thing I can imagine doing is to reinstall Mythdora, although I am not sure if that will make any difference. The network did work at first, though!

Before I do that, are there any diagnostic tools I can use to see what exactly is happening and find the specific problem?

The same thing

I am running dhclient to enable the eth0:

But the same thing has been happening to me. I try a
ifconfig eth0 down
then back up, I do that a couple of times and that seems to work.

Not sure what is happening.

I am using an on-board lan card.

Ack!! I've read of some problems with those VIA lan cards. You may want to spend a few bucks and get a PCI card.

Funny that actually

i have tons of alternative lan cards, the trouble being that my wlan is a pci, as is my tv-card, and my poor box only has (gasp) 2 pci slots.

So, whenever i get all these other issues dealt with, then i can move on, and deal with the wlan.
