When I tried to do an auto install my system would hang once the installer gui came up, I could move my mouse for a few seconds and then it would just get stuck. So I tried a text install which worked, after reboot everything would work find untill the gui came up were it asked for my timezone info, were (again) after a few seconds everything would lock up. I reset and the screen didnt display anything at the time when the gui should come up(after all the lines of green ok's) the screen is just blank, i reinstalled and everything happened again(gui for 2 seconds the 1st time, nothing the second)
Does anyone have any ideas?

Specs
First off, I wanted to try out Myth on a machine I built this summer before I went out and bought new stuff for a PVR (ya know just to mess around with it before I shell out the cash). So it's not life or death...
ABIT Radeon rx600 pro-guru video card (this is a pci-express card which I have feeling is the problem, besides the fact that it's ati... I know when I build for real I'll use a nVidia)
Hauppauge 150
ASUS p5gd2 deluxe
P4 540J (3.2ghz)
1 gig RAM
Pioneer DVD Burner DVR-109
Bottom line this was never built to be run as a Myth box (can't wait to build one though) so I'll understand if getting it to work isn't worth your time or my own(aka a thousand hoops to jump through).
Thanks in adavance and for your quick reply dingaling....

Uh yeah, that ATI card sounds like the culprit to me. Never even heard of that one. Just for shits and giggles you could try and use the "radeon" or "vesa" driver. That would require you to edit your xorg.conf file. Not sure what is in there now but give it a whirl. Reboot when your done.

vesa works
Dingaling-
You may be intrestted that the driver was set to radeon and I changed it to "vesa" and that did the trick... if only I could get myth to work... I can't get a program guide (I signed up w/ zap2it) in the setup when I hit "Retrieve Listings" nothing happens. Secondly, when I choose watch tv I get a blank screen on both my moniter and tv (no sound either for that matter), though I find it odd that if I push my power button it gives me the usual linux shut proceedure and turns off(so its not like it locks up when going to live tv). Lastly my remote doesn't work that came with my pvr150 its the new back ande gray one (with colored buttons on bottom) and thats what I chose in the setup but nothing...
So with these problems it seems that I'm just messing the setup up, but since you were so helpful early I figured why not ask?
Hey glad the vesa driver work
Hey glad the vesa driver worked :-). If your not getting Listings then 1 of 2 things is wrong. Either your zap2it account is wrong OR your not able to even get out on the web. Have you checked to make sure that you can do this? If so and your listings still aren't showing up then double check your username and password. If they're right then when you hit "Retrieve Listings" you should see your cable or satillite company you use along with the type of listings you chose at zap2it.
Now for your blank screen. Myth WILL NOT work until you get your listings problem straightened out. Theres nothing to tune so you get a black screen. Also the remote is probably not working because again theres nothing to tune so it cant switch channels. When you setup MythDora, did you choose the first option in the Lirc setup. Thats the one that uses the newer remote you have. Trust me, everything works with MythDora. You just hit a snag in the setup.

domino effect
Thanks again for the quick response.... I would have given up awhile ago without such quick answers
Just so you know I'm keeping up with you when my lsitings wouldn't come up I knew it was one of those two things. But anywho I know my account setting are right as they are the same I use everywhere(I know bad idea but I'm lazy) and as for the web acess I can use the wire here on my home network to get to the internet on my laptop(winxp) via my router(so physically I can reach the net), what's ths simpliest way now that I have MythDora installed to see if i can get out to the web? Oh and I did choose the right remote setting (I've done the install twice now)
Thanks again...

The simplest way would be to get to an xterm and to ping something on the outside. Try this
ping 207.69.188.187
Thats my ISP DNS numbers. Also you can just do an "apt-get update" to see if it will pull in anything. You do that as root by the way. If those work then your golden. BUT theres still the listings prob. So what does it do, or not do? Just sit there?
"Please ignore the man behind the curtain"
Dennis
Not so golden
Well I guess this answers that question when I try to do the ping (well before actually i was asking how to get to an xterm, cos from there I knew to do a ping but I figured it out) i get network unreachable, I can't even ping my router.
As for the listing prob (which is way secondary to not getting to my router) I hit the botton, and the scren does a quick flash(like another box is gunna open) and thats it, nothing changed.
BTW can I get to the intial setup without doing a reinstall, so far that's been the only time I've seen it, in the setup options on the main screen I cant find anyway to change those intial setting...
Don't want to sound redundant, but very sincere I really appreciate the help...

Had a feeling that was the problem. I think your asking if you can get to the network setup? To do that, as root in an xterm just type in setup. Then go to network configuration. I sure hope your not using a wireless card. Cause getting that setup in Linux is real PIA. Don't think I'll be able to help you there. I've got a wireless MythDora frontend setup on my laptop and it took me forever to get it configured.

Am I stuck?
Nope not wireless... onbaord LAN... so any ideas on getting out to the Internet? And the setup I meant was one within myth that runs the firstime after the install...
And after going to the network settup in xterm the window has a bunch of "error reading info for sercice lircd: Invaild Argument" does that give any clues?

OK good. It sounds like FC3 isn't picking up your network card. I think you said you have ASUS board. Not sure if thats an Nforce board or not. Those have had problems cause they use proprietary drivers. What does "ifconfig" report? Oh and sorry, thought you meant network setup. To get to the setup in Myth, again an xterm and just type in mythtvsetup.

I have anetwork card I could pop in if you think that's the problem, and if so what should I do to get it setup (aka reintall MythDora, change something in one of the setups, etc)
Yeah, it doesn't look like yo
Yeah, it doesn't look like your card is getting recognized. This isn't uncommon especially if you have an Nforce board. I would throw in that other card and then do a reboot. It then should get picked up by FC3 or you could just reinstall to make things easier on yourself.

Dingaling you were right on the money, thanks so much...
I change the network card and was able to pull down my listings and my remote works! The only thing is that I can only tune in static (every channel is static).
So close... thanks agian
Good glad to hear that worked
Good glad to hear that worked. If your getting nothing but static that usually means you've got an incorrect tuner stated. When you go into mythtvsetup,
Section 2 - Capture Card
Create New capture card
Next, Card Type: MPEG-2 Encoder (PVR-250,350)
Video Device: /dev/video0 (this is the name of mine)
VBI device: /dev/vbi
Audio Device: /dev/dsp
Audio sampling rate 48000
Default Input: Composite 4
Section 3 - Video Sources
I HOPE YOU HAVE THIS CONFIGURED!!! This is another topic.
Section 4 - Input Connections
Down at #8 [MPEG: /dev/video0] (Composite 4) -> (Choose this one)
Next screen, Video source: /dev/video0 (or whatever you named it in step 2)
Input preference: 0
External Change Command: point to the directory your script resides in if using this feature
Preset tuner to channel: empty
Starting channel: your choice
Now this is what you might use if your going the Composite route. If your going the S-Video route, then use something like S-Video 2. Options 2&4 have to match up.

Seriously I'm not that stupid
OK my last post should have read... Thanks so much dingaling everything is working wonderfully, I really appreaciate all the help, and give my compliments on the package you put together...
I really don't want to have to admitt that in the process of moving my pc from one room to another I forgot to reattach the cable wire, thus no signal, and the static (Doh!)
I will defiently use MythDora when I build my dedicated myth box, thanks again for everything.
