So, as per your advice, I'm checking out wilsonet.com. I found that in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file the "Videocard0" device is set to "vesa" Driver generic, so I'm trying to follow the insrtuctions for installing the nvidia driver.

Aaah even better. That card is supported under the 7174 driver I have. If you did an auto install the driver will be installed regardless and the appropiatte driver will then be inserted into xorg.conf. This should have been the "nvidia" driver not "nv" or "vesa".

7174 driver works!

Well, I downloaded and installed the new driver before reading this message, but that did the trick. Works great. Now, if I can just figure out how to get it to wok on my big screen tv. /dev/video missing.

Right now I just want to get NTSC onto the TV. I'll worry about actually watching HD content when I get more up to speed and buy an HD capture card.

Do a /sbin/modprobe ivtv and that should create your video device. But this shouldn't be disappearing on you. And /dev/sound isn't what your looking for, it's /dev/dsp.
