Capture VHS Input (Convert VHS to DVD with MythTV)

I have MythDora installed, and I want to not only record tv but also convert my VHS movie's to DVD's. Will MythTV do this (at least for the video capture?)

How would I set up MythTV to do the video capture without affecting my TV recording setup?

Thanks,

Greg

Well I don't know if MythTV

Well I don't know if MythTV is the ideal capture application to capture your VHS recordings to DVD but it is possible. Here is how I would go about doing it:

1. Setup my a video source in mythtv-setup for my capture card (or any other device with has an av input).

2. Hook up the VCR appropriately and test that everything is working in the frontend (eg: you should be able to see your video playback on screen once have selected the appropriate video source in the frontend.

3. Get the tape ready at the point where you want to start recording from.

4. Play on the video recorder and start the frontend recording until the tape has played through.

5. Repeat steps 3-4 for each VHS you want to backup. You can use MythTVs commercial cutting tools to trim the start and end of each recording if you want to neaten things up.

6. Once you have all the recordings on your hard drive, you can name them appropriately and then use MythArchive (MythTv v0.20 only) or MythBurn ( MythTv < 0.19) to burn the shows to DVD.

Hope that helps,

Thanks INM8. That sounds

Thanks INM8. That sounds promising. Is there a better capture solution since you don't think MythTV is ideal? Since MythTV recognizes my PRV150 card, does that mean any application on the computer also can use it?

Thanks again!

Greg

Well the only reason I said

Well the only reason I said it isn't ideal is because it encapsulates all your recordings in the .nuv container by default. Since you are going to be burning the files to DVD anyway this isn't a big issue (it would be more of a problem if you just wanted to do a raw video capture), because mytharchive (or mythburn) will do all the dirty (encoding) work for you. I had a bit of a look around, and it seems that this will be the easiest option for you given that you are relatively familiar with using MythTv's recording facilities. Other then that, there are command line facilities that may be more to your liking (i have heard of one called "mple") but there isn't really any good reason to use it over MythTv, remembering that you also will need to encode the video to an appropriaty sized mpeg2 file and then burn that with another application should you choose to go this route.

Not totally. Since the ivtv drivers are installing and configured, only certain applications can use it. Take tvtime and xawtv for instance, it has no MPEG2 decoding capabilities or audio playback code, and therefore cannot be used with these cards. But I'm sure there are other apps that may work with it.
