I tried installing MythDora 2.32 on a Via Epia 5000. The installation page came up, but if i try typing auto, or auto text, the system reboots. if i type linux it says "Could not find kernel image: linux." so, does MythDora 2.32 support the EPIA chipset?

i am currently downloading MythDora 3.0 to try that. does it have support for the EPIA chipset?

Did you download the

Did you download the Unichrome 2.32 version? And all you need to type is auto. Do not type linux.

no i didn't download the Unichrome version. i tried typing auto and it rebooted as well. will the MythDora 3.0 version work? i didn't see choices for unichrome or xorg.

If you didn't use the

If you didn't use the Unichrome version then this is why. Version 3.0 has the Unichrome built in now. Being an Epia board it may want to boot into text rather than GUI but it should work.

Unknown interrupt or fault at EIP % % %

i got my MythDora v3.0 dvd now. after fighting with the bios to recognize my DVD drive, i finally got the MythDora install screen. If i type then auto .
it says

loading vmlinuz....
loading initrd.....

then the screen fills top to bottom with the error:
Unknown interrupt or fault at EIP % % %
all i can do is a hard reset.

i also tried typing mediacheck and auto text and got the same error.

possible reason, no solution

looking at some ubuntu boards i found a possible explanation:

Quote:

This problem occurs because certain Via and Pentium M chips don't support PAE, which is required for the HIGHMEM64G (>4GB memory support) built into the -server kernel. The easiest solution is to use the alternate install CD.

See this launchpad bug:

It seems that the kernel should be recompiled

Is it possible to have the kernel compiled with HIGHMEM4G instead ?

I can confirm that this is a problem on Pentium M as well (M745 in my case) and should also be a problem in VMWare....

In the ubuntu thread the following suggestion is given :

Quote:
Confirming this bug; not sure what package to assign to though as it's not really a linux-source-2.6.17 bug, but a bug in the config options selected for the installer kernel.

I suggest HIGHMEM4G is used except if the user specifically requests support for 64G of RAM. The vast majority of users using Ubuntu Server will have <=4GB RAM. As stated earlier, HIGHMEM64G requires PAE which breaks on some Via (Epia) and Pentium M chips, leading to an unbootable kernel on these systems.

An SMP kernel needs the HIGHMEM64 code I believe so this couldn't be done. And even if I wasn't using an SMP kernel, I have enough on my plate than to recompile a kernel.

More information

I have the same problem with an SP13000 motherboard.
I noticed I can boot to a working system using the alternate uniprocessor kernel so it seems to be a problem with the SMP kernel and EPIA CPUs.
Unfortunately the kernel modules I need (ivtv being the most important) are not available for the uniprocessor kernel.
Anyone have a solution?

Well this isn't good news. I

Well this isn't good news. I was under the impression that the more modern Epia boards wouldn't have a problem with an SMP kernel. This really defeats the purpose of what I'm trying to do. The only solution is to boot into the single processor and go get the packages using yum. But that would want to pull in a new kernel and now your right back at the start of everything. So basically you would be doing nothing more than installing from scratch.

That really sucks !!!!

Is is possible to provide a recompiled SMP kernel without PAE support? Would that work?

Anyone?

Anyone?

I'm having the same "unknown interrupt" problem on first boot with MythDora 3.2, on a VIA EPIA SP13000 motherboard.

I think a lot of people get these EPIA boards specifically to make a Myth-box with, so it would be a shame to write them off...

Hmm, I 'sorta' have it

Hmm, I 'sorta' have it working...

I hit a key at the GRUB screen and chose the 2nd option "MythDora-up (2.6.18-1.2239.fc5)". The default is "MythDora (2.6.18-1.2257.fc5smp)"

This seems to work until it comes time to run mythtvsetup... double click the icon... hour-glass... then nothing. mythtv itself does the same thing. Any thoughts?

No need to even bother with

No need to even bother with running the up kernel unless you have a card that it supported natively with the kernel. There are no ivtv drivers for this kernel as well as any of the kernel module rpm's that come with the SMP kernel. If it won't work using the SMP kernel then I'm afraid your out of luck using this version. You can always use the 2.32 Unichrome version though.

I was just told that the new kernel in version 3.2 worked on an EPIA EN15000 board. I hoped it would work on the rest of them but apparently not. There's nothing I can do about that I'm afraid. Your board will work with MythTV, it just won't work with MythDora using an SMP kernel.

The SP boards use the C3

The SP boards use the C3 CPU, the EN board uses a C7 CPU.

The only 5000 board I could find is the original EPIAs - which are C3s but they don't list the video card type but it does have Svideo and composite TV out.

Ubuntu has the same issue booting with SMP kernel - and it appears to be C3s over there too.

My EN board lets you choose the MPS version in the BIOS, and mine is at the default of 1.4. Be worth checking whether you get this option on the SP board and set it to the default.

Cheers

I couldn't find the MPS BIOS option... don't think it's there.
